What To Look For In a SEO Company
There’s an interesting ongoing discussion on sitepoint forums on what to look out for in a SEO company.
levosgien’s question was simple:
I own a franchise and would like to market our web site online, and am looking at SEO solutions.
I was wondering if you could tell me:
a) where I can look for these companies
b) what I should look for in these companies (reasonable rates etc…)
c) if you have any to recommend
As of the time of this post there was 6 replies and i think post number 6 is the best so far.

My advice for choosing an SEO would be:
<> Avoid people who guarantee 1st place rankings. Nobody can guarantee you first place rankings and if they do, it will probably be for obscure 20 word search terms that will get you no traffic.
<> Avoid people who will SEO your site for $20 a month. SEO pricing varies massively, I would expect to pay around £30-100 ($60-$200) per hour for a good standard of work.
<> Always, always ask for references, although you can’t get guarantees, the proof is in the pudding - have a look at what rankings they have achieved for other clients and contact these people and see if they were happy with the service.
<> Make sure if you are building a site, you get an SEO expert to talk to you before you build it!
<> Nobody has a “special” relationship with Google that can help them.
<> There are no real “tricks” to SEO, if they start talking about using hidding text, or cloaking etc - (see SEO FAQ) run a mile.
<> Educate yourself by looking around these forums first, so you know roughly what you’re talking about first.
